The records in this series comprise financial ledgers, yearly financial reports, and correspondence related to financial matters for the Women's Mission Society (WMS) of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church from 1908-1963. The records are from 1930-1963, but because no complete records were kept for the WMS from 1908-1937, at a later date a member of the society prepared a report including financial information beginning with 1908. There are no original records in the series generated prior to 1930. The first set of records are handwritten entries from ledgers for 1930-1937 and 1942-1958. These entries detail income and expenses for the society. The ledger for 1930-1937 has listings under "udgifter" (expenses) and "intagter" (income). The later lists are subdivided by districts and the amount each contributed. The ledger for 1942-1958 contains recorded entries of receipts and disbursements and has additional value in that it shows what types of women's organizations participated in the WMS. The ledger also lists how funds were disbursed and in so doing provides additional information about projects with which the WMS was involved. For 1956-1957 receipts are organized by district. This information is helpful because the district records in this collection are incomplete and this provides additional information about the kinds of projects with which districts were involved. For 1908-1963 there are typewritten records, produced at a later date, showing disbursements from 1908-1919, and for 1920-1963 financial reports showing receipts, disbursements, budgets, and in some cases, auditors' reports. Some of the records are copies of financial reports as they appeared in the Women's Page of Lutheran Tidings. There is a small amount of financial correspondence pertaining primarily to the transfer of financial assets from the WMS to Lutheran Church Women (LCW) after the merger. Other financial correspondence acknowledges contributions received by WMS.
